The purpose of Neva Designs is to create beauty through intriguing lighting, accessories, bedding and textiles for interiors. The motivation is to create more business for our woman’s co-op in Pakistan (sewing, quilting and embroidering) and for the Americans we employ here making our lighting fixtures, lamp shades and custom home furnishings. The design sensibility comes from several inspirations: Paintings by Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, Titian, Casper David Friedrich, Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo and Montana Morrison; Belgium “Mille Fleur” tapestries circa 1400-1500; Japanese embroideries from the 1960s, Imperial Russia and the couture floral creations of Eddie Zaratsian. The company is based in Los Osos, California, a small coastal town half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Neva Designs started in April 1996, Julie Neva paintings were cut up, turned into hanging shades and schlepped to stores. This parlayed into doing one of a kind lamps and custom lighting projects for restaurants, salons, private homes and Cirque Du Soleil. The first official collection premiered at the California Gift Show in July 1997 and included lamps, candle holders, chandeliers and framed drawings. The lighting business took flight.
The lamps and chandeliers are dramatic in style, yet sophisticated in design. They are an unashamedly mix of solid brass, metal and hand blown glass from the neck down and include an ornate variety of velvets, embroidered organza's and silk from the neck up. The lamps sold mostly to high-end stores, designers and celebrities primarily on the west coast. Due to this success Neva Designs became partners with Fredrick Ramond, a well-established larger lighting company in October of 2002. By July 2003, Neva Designs had morphed into a design studio, designing and producing an array of products for diverse applications. The textiles like the lamps are very colorful, rich in texture and conjure bravura effects. Primarily velvets, organza, silks and cottons, which are then mixed together and can be detailed, appliquéd and/or embroidered. Neva Designs can literally make anything imaginable from 20-foot draperies to tiny handbags. One of the things we do is create exclusive products for our clients.
